NSCA Students Acquire Certification
National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA)
As the worldwide Authority on Strength and Conditioning, the NSCA supports and disseminates research-based knowledge and practical applications to improve athletic performance and fitness.
Founded in 1978, the NSCA has been serving its members by bridging the gap between science and practice. On the NSCA’s website, interested parties can take an online tour of the organization’s legacy and learn about its impact on strength and conditioning in both practice and profession.
The NSCA operates as a diverse group of professionals from the sports science, athletic, allied health, and fitness industries. Its initiatives are governed by a board of nine directors and managed by an executive director and staff to carry out business.
The NSCA offers CSPS, NSCA-CPT and CSCS certifications. The CSCS certification is a specialized program that identifies individuals who have demonstrated proficiency in the areas of strength and conditioning practices. Those certified individuals come from a diverse academic and professional background and comprise coaches, athletic trainers, physical therapists, personal trainers, physicians, chiropractors, researchers and educators. The NSCACPT certification targets personal trainers who work with both active and sedentary clients in one-on-one situations across a variety of facilities including schools, health and fitness clubs, and clients’ homes.
Today’s marketplace has become increasingly competitive, and employers are looking for the most qualified professionals to complement their teams. Over the last years, the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and the NSCA-Certified Personal Trainer credentials have gained a reputation among employers, professors and industry experts around the world as being the most respected and preferred fitness-related credentials. Obtaining the CSCS or NSCA-CPT certification offers students the possibility to open doors both professionally and financially.
By simply adding the CSCS or NSCA-CPT designation after their names, students acquire credibility in the eyes of potential employers. This is confirmed and demonstrated by industry expert Juan Carlos Santana, MEd, CSCS,*D who affirms that “In these competitive times, NSCA certifications attest to both the acquisition of progressive information and a solid education. To be successful in the fitness industry, the CSCS and NSCA-CPT should be the credentials of choice for every fitness professional.”
NSCA’s exams are considered by many to be the most difficult in the industry to pass, which is one of the main reasons that those who excel display their credentials with pride. The sophistication of the exam development process also contributes to the preferred status of the certifications. Overseen by industry experts and psychometricians specialized in setting up certification and licensure examinations, the CSCS and NSCA-CPT tests focus on “real world” responsibilities in the area of strength and conditioning, and the training of professionals.
The exam development and administration procedures are based on the accreditation guidelines of the renowned National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA), based in Washington D.C. While there are hundreds of fitness-related credentials in the marketplace today, the NSCA is the only organization to have credentials that have been accredited for more than 10 years.
The CSCS and NSCA-CPT certifications assist professionals in achieving their career goals across a variety of the industry’s responsibility fields. Many athletic trainers, physical therapists and chiropractors have earned the CSCS credential to highlight an additional area of expertise, while the NSCA-CPT certification is highly valued and often required at health and fitness facilities as well as corporate wellness centers throughout the country.
